Fishing Reel Theft at Jays

On 7-24-13 at approximately 1:30 pm the Clare County Sheriff Department responded to Jay’s Sporting Goods in Grant Township for a retail fraud complaint. Upon arrival Deputies found that two males had stolen fishing equipment, estimated to cost $1460, by removing fishing reels from the boxes and leaving the empty boxes in a corner area of the store. Taken were: 1 Swimano Stella 2500FE Fishing Reel estimated value $730; 1 Swimano Sustain 3000FG reel estimated at $330; 1 Swimano Stradic C14 Fishing Reel estimated at $200; and 1 Flueger Fishing Reel estimated at $200. A Call leads to arrest for Breaking and Entering

On 7-27-13 at approximately 10 pm Clare County Central Dispatch received a call of a suspicious situation / possibly a breaking at entering at a home on Pointview Drive in Hayes Township. Authorities were advised by the homeowner that nobody was supposed to be in the residence. Upon arrival Deputies found a 37 year old male from Lake, a 57 year old male from Harrison, and a 29 year old female from Harrison inside the home.                         On 7-26-13 Clare County Sheriff Deputies made contact at a residence on Knollwood Road in Hayes Township regarding the apprehension of a fugitive absconder. Upon making contact Deputies learned that the absconder was present in the home. Deputies were denied access to the home and the fugitive fled out the back door of the home to avoid capture. Graham charged with embezzling over $100K from Fair Salvage

By Pat Maurer Correspondent A 45-year-old Farwell man is behind bars on charges of embezzlement from Fair Salvage Company, in northern Isabella County’s Vernon Township. Todd James Graham was arrested Tuesday when the embezzlement was discovered. According to a release from Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski, Graham was an office employee at the company for between six and eight years. “The theft was discovered Tuesday and reported Tuesday,” the Sheriff said. “The dollar amount of the embezzlement is still being investigated,” Mioduszewski added, “but it is quite likely the amount will actually be much higher.” Graham was arraigned Wednesday afternoon [...]

By Pat Maurer Correspondent Melvin Smith, 25, and his father Melvin Smith, 45, were both arrested July 26 at a home on Knollwood Road in Hayes Township. The younger Smith was called a “fugitive absconder.” And when Clare County Sheriff Department Deputies attempted to access the home where he was reportedly hiding, they were denied access. Meanwhile the younger Smith made an attempt to elude capture by fleeing out the back door of the home. Two men are still being sought in connection with the theft of a compound bow on June 28: a man in his mid-30s with a medium build with short brown hair, partly bald and a woman in her late 20s or early 30s with shoulder length brown hair. By Pat Maurer Correspondent Two men and one woman were arrested for illegal entry after they broke into a home on Pointview Drive in Hayes Township last Saturday night. Deputies were called to the residence around 10 p.m. after being advised of a possible breaking and entering. The homeowner said no one was supposed to be in the residence. Clark points gun at salesman

By Pat Maurer Correspondent Kurt Clark, 46, of Farwell, is facing assault charges after he allegedly pointed a gun at a salesman who came to his door. Clare County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the Surrey Township home near Riley and Hatchery Roads around 4:30 July 31. The salesman had also called at Clark’s neighbor’s, according to a release from the CCSD. Clark was arrested for felonious assault and taken to the Clare County Jail. BrewFest raises funds for K-9 dog

By Pat Maurer Correspondent The Clare BrewFest, which began in Clare in 2011 as part of the events during the Old 27 Classic Car Tour, has grown so much that this year it will be a stand-alone event planned, organized and presented by the Clare Rotary Club. The adults-only BrewFest is scheduled for this Saturday, August 10 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Fourth Street across from the Clare water tower. By Pat Maurer Correspondent Isabella County Sheriff’s Department officers are searching for two men they believe set vehicles on fire in two incidents August 3. According to Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski, the arsons happened between 3:30 and 4:10 a.m. the first vehicle fire, a red 2001 Pontiac Grand Am four-door, was on private property near the northeast corner of Baseline Road and Crawford Road. The second incident, involving a white 1992 Buick Regal four-door, happened in the parking lot of Rosebush Estates on Mission Road. By Pat Maurer Correspondent Clare County Sheriff’s Deputies are looking for the owner of an older, maroon Oldsmobile Cutlass in connection with a hit-and-run accident Monday. According to a release from Undersheriff Dwayne Miedzianowski, two people, Diana Backus, 64 of Harrison and her 16-year-old passenger received minor injuries when Backus’s 2012 Chevrolet was hit by the driver of the Cutlass, which then left the scene of the accident. Deputies responding to a “possible break-in” at the home in the 6000 block of Mostetler Road arrived to find the break-in in progress. One of the suspects spotted the deputy and three ran from the scene. Prisoner commits suicide in County jail

By Pat Maurer Correspondent Edwin Simpson, 42, a Federal inmate from southern Michigan being housed at the Clare County Jail, died Monday after he used his sheet to hang himself at the jail September 12. Sheriff John Wilson said Simpson was discovered in his cell around 4:30 p.m. by officers after another inmate notified them. Corrections staff immediately initiated CPR and Mobile Medical Response Ambulance Service was summoned and continued treatment. Christon Chapman was arrested September 25 at his Freeman Township home for harboring Kaylee Smith-Sanders of Farwell after officers discovered he knew she was a runaway. Smith-Sanders was not at the home at the time of the arrest, but was found hiding in the area of Chapman’s home later on September 25. She had been missing for two days. On 10-3-13 at approximately 5:20 pm, State Police troopers responded to a report of a domestic assault involving a screwdriver as a weapon. Canadian man dies in 2-car U.S. 10 accident

On 10-09-2013 at 11:46 a.m. Deputies from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office were called to the intersection of US-10 and 170th Avenue (Hersey Township) on the report of a 2 vehicle crash involving fatal injuries.
